The Supreme Court has issued a stay order on the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) investigation into the state cabinet's involvement in the SSC case, reinstating a directive from the Calcutta High Court regarding the jobs of 25,750 applicants. In a recent verdict, the Calcutta High Court had allowed the CBI to probe the cabinet's actions.

However, the state's lawyer appealed to the apex court, about potential legal ramifications during ongoing elections. Stating that, if CBI investigates, there is a danger of the entire cabinet going to jail. The High Court has given such an order, which cannot be implemented. An interim stay should be imposed on that decision.

Challenging the order, the state government, in its appeal filed before the top court, said the high court cancelled the appointments "arbitrarily".

The court in its order stated "We will stay the direction which says the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) will undertake further investigation against officials in the state government."

Although the apex court has stayed the investigation against the cabinet member regarding the creation of Super Numeric Post for a week, the court has not stayed the rest of the judgment of the High Court which includes cancellation of 25,753 jobs.

In the hearing, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said, “The appointment has been made outside the panel. It is a complete fraud.” The apex court said that the next hearing of the case will be on Monday.
